HVAC FAQ — AAM | SE Louisiana & Mississippi Gulf Coast

Question 1

How often should I service my AC unit in Southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast?

Accepted Answer

In Southeast Louisiana and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we recommend a professional AC tune-up at least once a year — ideally in spring before the cooling season hits. The Gulf South climate is harder on HVAC equipment than almost anywhere in the country: extreme humidity, long cooling seasons that run 8 to 9 months, and coastal salt air that accelerates corrosion on coils, electrical contacts, and refrigerant lines. Homes in Bay St. Louis, Waveland, and Pass Christian face the same salt-air wear as properties in Slidell or Metairie. Annual maintenance catches small problems before they become expensive emergency calls in July.

Question 2

What's included in AAM's preventive maintenance visit?

Accepted Answer

A standard AAM maintenance visit includes a full system inspection, coil cleaning (evaporator and condenser), filter check and replacement recommendation, refrigerant level check, electrical connection tightening, capacitor and contactor inspection, thermostat calibration check, and a drain line flush. In coastal areas — including the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Southshore Louisiana — we pay extra attention to salt-air corrosion on outdoor components. We'll tell you what we find and what — if anything — needs attention. No pressure, no upsell.

Question 3

How do I know if my AC needs repair or full replacement?

Accepted Answer

As a general rule: if your system is under 10 years old and the repair cost is less than half the cost of a new system, repair usually makes sense. If it's over 12–15 years old, requires frequent repairs, or uses R-22 refrigerant (no longer manufactured), replacement is often the smarter investment. In coastal Gulf Coast environments — both Louisiana and Mississippi — systems can age faster due to salt air and humidity, so age alone isn't always the deciding factor. AAM will give you an honest assessment — we'll tell you what we'd do if it were our own home.

Question 4

Why does my AC run constantly but never cool the house down?

Accepted Answer

Across the Gulf South — from Hancock County, MS to Jefferson Parish, LA — this usually points to one of four issues: low refrigerant (often from a slow leak), a dirty evaporator or condenser coil reducing heat transfer, an undersized system for the home's load, or significant duct leakage losing conditioned air before it reaches the living space. High Gulf Coast humidity can also make it feel warmer than the thermostat reads even when the system is working correctly. A diagnostic visit will identify the cause — call 985-771-6222 (Northshore/LA) or 504-230-6655 (Southshore/MS Gulf Coast).

Question 5

What SEER rating should I look for when replacing my AC in Louisiana or Mississippi?

Accepted Answer

Both Louisiana and Mississippi have some of the longest cooling seasons in the country — your AC runs 8 to 9 months a year in most of our service area. We recommend at least a 16 SEER2 system for most homes; 18+ SEER2 makes sense for larger homes or homeowners planning to stay long-term. Higher SEER systems cost more upfront but the energy savings in the Gulf South typically offset the difference within 3–5 years. Mississippi Gulf Coast homeowners face the same efficiency math as Louisiana customers — we'll run the numbers for your specific home before recommending anything.

Question 6

Does AAM offer emergency HVAC service in Louisiana and Mississippi?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AAM offers emergency HVAC service across Southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast — including Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Diamondhead, Pass Christian, Slidell, Covington, Metairie, and New Orleans. Call or text 985-771-6222 (Northshore LA) or 504-230-6655 (Southshore LA and MS Gulf Coast) — we answer 24/7. When your AC goes down in Gulf Coast heat, we treat it as the emergency it is.

Question 7

How fast can AAM respond to an emergency AC call on the Gulf Coast?

Accepted Answer

Same-day service is available in most of our service area, including the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Response time depends on location and current call volume, but we prioritize emergency calls — especially during heat events. Call us directly at 985-771-6222 or 504-230-6655 for the fastest response. We don't route you through a call center — you reach us directly.

Question 8

What should I do while waiting for an HVAC technician?

Accepted Answer

Turn the system off at the thermostat to prevent further damage — especially if you hear unusual noises, smell burning, or see ice on the unit. Close blinds and interior doors to keep heat out of occupied rooms. In Gulf Coast summer heat, move vulnerable family members, elderly relatives, or pets to the coolest part of the house or a neighbor's home if temperatures are dangerous. Check and replace your air filter if it's visibly clogged — a blocked filter is one of the most common causes of system shutdowns across both Louisiana and Mississippi.
